Our Lady of the Rosary

This memorial on October 7 was established by Pope Pius V in 1571 to commemorate the Christian naval victory at the Battle of Lepanto, which he attributed to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin through the praying of the Rosary. The feast was originally called "Our Lady of Victory" before being renamed to honor the prayer itself.

The Rosary as a devotion evolved over centuries, but its modern form — meditations on the mysteries of Christ's life while praying Hail Marys on beads — is traditionally attributed to St. Dominic, who received it from the Virgin in a vision. Whether legend or history, the prayer became the most widespread form of Catholic popular devotion worldwide.

The memorial celebrates not a historical battle but the prayer that sustained it — and the millions who have prayed it since. The Rosary is a school of contemplation disguised as repetition: through the rhythm of the beads, the mind is drawn into the great events of salvation. Popes from Leo XIII to Francis have called it the most powerful prayer after the Mass.
