The Holy Family

Celebrated on the Sunday within the octave of Christmas, the feast invites every family to look at the three of Nazareth — a young mother, a quiet carpenter, and a child who is God — and to recognize there the pattern of the Christian home. Pope Leo XIII extended the feast to the universal Church in 1893 to defend the family at the dawn of the industrial age.

The Gospels offer only glimpses of that hidden life — the flight into Egypt, the anxious search for the boy in the Temple, the long silent years of work and prayer in a small village. Yet these fragments are enough to reveal that holiness does not require extraordinary circumstances, only the faithful love of ordinary days lived in the presence of God.
