Mass Readings

Today, as we journey through the first Friday of Lent, we find ourselves in a sacred time of reflection and renewal, drawing closer to Christ through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. This season invites us to prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter.

First Reading

Wisdom 7: 7-10, 15-16

For this cause I prayed, and understanding was given me: I called upon God, and there came to me a spirit of wisdom. I preferred her before sceptres and thrones, And riches I esteemed nothing in comparison of her. Neither did I liken to her any priceless gem, Because all the gold of the earth in her presence is a little sand, And silver will be accounted as clay before her. Above health and comeliness I loved her, And I chose to have her rather than light, Because her bright shining is never laid to sleep. But to me may God give to speak with judgement, And to conceive thoughts worthy of what has been given me;

Because himself is one that guideth even wisdom and that correcteth the wise. For in his hand are both we and our words; All understanding, and all acquaintance with various crafts.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 37: 3-4, 5-6, 30-31

Trust in Yahweh, and do good. Dwell in the land, and enjoy safe pasture. Also delight yourself in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to Yahweh. Trust also in him, and he will do this: he will make your righteousness go out as the light, and your justice as the noon day sun. The mouth of the righteous talks of wisdom. His tongue speaks justice. The law of his God is in his heart. None of his steps shall slide.

Gospel Acclamation

John 6: 63c, 68c

It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.

Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.

Gospel

Matthew 7: 21-29

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Many will tell me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?’

Then I will tell them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you who work iniquity.’

“Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock.

The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn’t fall, for it was founded on the rock.

Everyone who hears these words of mine, and doesn’t do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand.

The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” When Jesus had finished saying these things, the multitudes were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them with authority, and not like the scribes.
