Hunger for Living Bread
Today, we hear how severe persecution scattered the early Church, even as Saul began his destructive efforts. Amidst this turmoil, Jesus profoundly declares Himself the Bread of Life, promising that all who come to Him will never hunger or thirst, and will be raised on the Last Day. The Psalm calls us to joyfully praise God for His tremendous deeds, even in challenging times.
Let us prayerfully consider how these ancient words speak to our own hunger for spiritual nourishment and eternal hope.
Hunger for Living Bread
The theme of "Hunger for the Living Bread" resonates deeply with Jesus' promises in John 6:35-40. In this passage, Jesus declares Himself as the Bread of Life, stating, "Whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst" (John 6:35). This profound promise addresses both our physical and spiritual needs, highlighting the deep longing within each person for fulfillment and meaning. In the context of the Easter season, when we celebrate the Resurrection, these words take on even greater significance. The resurrection of Christ assures us of the eternal life He offers, a life that nourishes us beyond mere physical sustenance. When Jesus speaks of never hungering or thirsting, He invites us to partake in a relationship with Him that satisfies our deepest spiritual desires. In the reading from Acts (Acts 8:1b-8), we see the early Christians, filled with the Spirit, spreading the Good News and performing wonders. Their mission was fueled by the Bread of Life they had received—Christ Himself. This connection illustrates that the nourishment Jesus offers empowers believers to be witnesses of His love and truth, even amidst persecution. The promise of never hungering or thirsting extends beyond individual fulfillment; it calls us into a community that shares in the Living Bread. As we continue our journey of faith, let us seek Him in the Eucharist, which the Church teaches is the true Body and Blood of Christ (CCC 1324). In this way, we can find the sustenance we seek and fulfill our mission to share that Bread with others.
